Sen. Doris Turner (D-Springfield) worked with the Massey Commission and law enforcement leaders to draft the bill language and ensure what happened to Massey never happens again.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The Massey Commission will host multiple events across Springfield honoring the one year anniversary of Sonya Massey's death. 

Massey was shot by a former Sangamon County Sheriff's Deputy a year ago on July 6. 

The commission encourages community members to wear purple throughout July and plant a purple flower in their yard in support and remembrance of Massey's life. 

Events:

  • Healing Circles: Monday, July 7 at the Thrive Center for Wellness, 3:30-5:30 p.m. and 5:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, July 17 at the SIU Survivor and Recovery Center, 6-8 p.m.
  • Balloon Release: Sunday, July 6 at 2868 S. Hoover St, 10 a.m.
  • Sonya Massey Memorial Bridge Dedication: Sunday, July 6 at 1415 E. Jefferson St., 3:30 p.m.
  • Sunday Funday: Sunday, July 6 at Unique's Bar & Grill, 5-10 p.m.
  • Levitt Amp Concert Dedicated to Sonya Massey: Thursday, July 10 at 4th & Jackson, next to Governor's Mansion, 6-9:30 p.m.
