Sonya Massey mural

Sen. Doris Turner (D-Springfield) worked with the Massey Commission and law enforcement leaders to draft the bill language and ensure what happened to Massey never happens again.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The artists who will paint the Sonya Massey bridge mural have been chosen.

Massey was killed in her home last July by then-Sangamon County Sheriff's Deputy Sean Grayson.

Grayson was charged with first-degree murder and the Sangamon County Board approved paying the Massey family a $10 million settlement.

The Massey family chose Nigel Carrington, Ozell Taylor, Lawanda Chillis and Austin Wells to help paint the mural honoring Sonya.

Alternate artists will be chosen if any of the selected candidates cannot submit their mural.
