DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - The Board of Education for Decatur Public School District has approved the acquisition of Oak Grove Park from the Decatur Park District.
The purchase, valued at $80,000 plus closing costs, works towards DPS's goal of enhancing outdoor learning and recreational opportunities for students.
The park district will use funds from the purchase to revitalize Garfield Park.
The acquisition of Oak Grove Park, located at 2275 West Center Street, Decatur, supports the completion of the new magnet school building by increasing managed greenspace for student activities and a potential solar array installation.
“This acquisition represents an investment in our students’ educational and recreational experiences,” said Dr. Larry Gray, Acting Superintendent of Decatur Public Schools. “By increasing access to outdoor learning spaces, we are not only fostering student engagement with nature but also contributing to a healthier and more active school environment.”
Clay Gerhard, Executive Director, Decatur Park District, said, “This decision exemplifies effective collaboration between the Decatur Park District and Decatur Public Schools, showcasing our joint ability to work together for the betterment of the community. This move reflects a forward-looking approach from both parties, demonstrating our commitment to long-term planning and the well-being of our community.”
