ELKHART, Ill. (WAND) — The Elkhart Historical Society is hosting a firefly walk and picnic event at the Nancy Jane Moore Community Park on Saturday, June 21.
The event will start with a bring-your-own picnic dinner at the park. The Historical Society is also teaming up with he Talk of the Town restaurant to offer a menu that people can order food from ahead of time for an easy picnic dinner.
After that, an educational talk and walk lead by Allen Yow will begin at the north end of Elkhart Hill. Yow already gives firefly tours in Springfield and Jacksonville every year, and he agreed to help get the Elkhart community involved.
The event is meant to educate people on fireflies and the science behind their glow. It is free to attend, and participating in the picnic is not required to go to the walk.
Attendees should be at the park no later than 7:50 p.m. with the walk and talk event starting around 8:00 p.m. The Historical Society hopes to make this an annual event.
