DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – This is no fish story. The Decatur Early Birds Kiwanis Club is helping young kids learn how to fish. Each year, hundreds of kids fish for the first time.

“Over the course of a year, somewhere close to a thousand,” said Kiwanis Club member Bill Meyer. “Every year it’s our signature project.”

Unity Christian first graders were picking up their fishing skills quickly on a sunny Tuesday morning. One girl pulled in around 18 small bluegill. The favorite meal for the fish appeared to have been tasty earthworms.

“Some kids have never fished before, never even touched a fish,” Herb Dreier told WAND News.

“I got a fish!” called out a young boy, a comment repeated by others throughout the morning.
