CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND)—LIHEAP, or the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, announces that its Champaign office will soon begin taking applications.

An administrator with LIHEAP in Champaign County says this is a program for those who need assistance with their heat or power bill, whether it be gas or propane, as well as furnace assistance where needed.

The program begins taking applications on Oct. 1 for people over 60, those with disabilities, families with children under six, those disconnected from their utilities, and those who have a notice for disconnection.

The assistance can also help those with less than 25% in their propane tank.

Applications are first-come-first-served. Incomes must be at or below 200% of the federal poverty level.

These are the income guidelines:

  • 1 person: $2,510
  • 2 people: $3,407
  • 3 people: $4,303
  • 4 people: $5,200

  • Proof of Gross income from all household members for 30 days prior to the application date
  • For all new customers new to LIHEAP, proof of Social Security Numbers, or an Individual Taxpayer Indemnification Number for all household members.
