DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Mahjong is making a comeback in Decatur, and organizers at the Decatur Civic Center say the game is bringing together players of all ages for a night of competition, conversation and community.
The Civic Center recently hosted “Mahjong & Mingle,” a monthly event where experienced players and newcomers gather to learn and play the tile-based game that has grown in popularity across the country.
Sarah Butts, marketing manager for the Decatur Civic Center, said the game has deep roots in American culture dating back nearly a century, but it wasn't until recently that Butts and her best friend decided to bring the game to more people in the Soy City.
“It’s addicting. It’s learned in layers,” Butts said.
She said the event has become about more than just the game itself.
“It brings all walks of life together,” she said. “You may play with your friends or with people you don’t know. It’s just a great bonding experience.”
Organizer and retiree Janet Kelsheimer said the popularity of mahjong has steadily grown in Decatur, leading to increased interest in events like Mahjong & Mingle.
“This turned into this wonderful Civic Center event called 'Mahjong & Mingle,'” Kelsheimer said. “Decatur needs many more mahjong activities because it’s really coming to the forefront.”
Kelsheimer said one of the biggest appeals of the game is the mental challenge it provides.
“It really uses your mind and makes you sharp,” she said. “It’s exciting to get certain tiles together and be the first one to yell mahjong.”
Players at the event ranged from beginners to longtime enthusiasts, with organizers encouraging anyone interested to give the game a try.
“The best thing for us is seeing the new person learning,” Butts said. “They’re so frustrated, and then they play mahjong, and everyone claps. It’s a big deal.”
"Mahjong & Mingle" is typically held on the third Tuesday of each month at the Decatur Civic Center. Organizers said anyone interested in joining can register through the Civic Center.
