SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The state capital is about to officially say hell-O to new changes at one of its Mel-O-Cream shops.

Mel-O-Cream will host a ribbon-cutting and celebration at noon Wednesday, Aug. 20, at its S. 6th Street location in Springfield.

Sangamon Donuts said in an Aug. 14 press release that the store will celebrate the new Route 66 shield-shaped doughnut sign and extended menu.

The sign, completed by Ace Sign Company, is part of a celebration of the 100th anniversary of Route 66 and honors the store's legacy on the iconic road.

Mel-O-Cream expanded its menu in May to include Rolling Lawns ice cream and various breakfast and lunch sandwiches. Hours at the location were also extended to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

“The addition of this unique installment will be another way for our visitors to engage with the nostalgia and history of Route 66 at a longstanding and well-known business in our community. We are thankful for Amanda and her team for all they do to promote the Mother Road throughout their locations.” Amy Beadle, Marketing Manager for Visit Springfield, said in the release.
