(WAND)- This Saturday marks six years since the "First Step Act" came into law—a program designed to assist individuals on the verge of being released from prison in reintegrating into society.

The bipartisan law has played a significant role in reducing overcrowding in federal prisons while revitalizing communities and reuniting families.

Of the over 40,000 individuals released under this law, fewer than 10 percent have been returned to custody.

State Senator Dick Durbin emphasized that lawmakers can learn from the experiences of those who have been jailed due to misguided policies in order to reform the future.
