Smashing pumpkins: Smash your Jack-o-lanterns at Decatur event in November

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - When it is time to say goodbye to your Jack-o-lantern for the Halloween season, a free outdoor Pumpkin Smash being offered in your area this November can help.

The University of Illinois Extension posted on its website that there will be a Pumpkin Smash from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 8, at Fairview Park in Decatur.

To participate, those interested can find a smash event site here. Then, participants can collect pumpkins from their homes, neighborhood, or elsewhere.

U of I Extension urges candles, paint and other non-organic materials, and drop them off at the smash site at the time and date listed. Pumpkins will then be transported to a composting site after the event concludes.
