DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - For decades, the sound of pins crashing and laughter echoing down the lanes was part of the heartbeat of North Jasper Street.

“Spare Time Lanes” was where the Decatur community once came together—on league nights, first dates, and Friday hangouts that stretched late into evenings.

Now, that familiar sound is back.

The longtime bowling alley has now been completely renovated and renamed Victory Lanes—a re-imagined space breathing new life into a beloved community staple.

“Decatur needs it,” said new owner David Small, who led the re-vamp effort. “You have to take an old-style bowling center and convert it into what the needs of today are.”

The transformation includes bright lighting, modern decor, and a refreshed kitchen serving up a new menu. The open layout also accommodates larger groups and crowds.

Regulars say the changes are striking—pun intended.

“People are enjoying themselves more,” said bowler Vicki Rentfrow. “It’s just a brighter atmosphere than it used to be.”

For David Small and his team, the project is about more than bowling—it’s about community, more than anything.

“I don’t want our families having to go out of town for entertainment,” he said. “I want them to be able to stay right here and have something they can enjoy in their own backyard.”

Victory Lanes is already drawing both longtime bowlers and first-time visitors. Many see it as a sign of progress for Decatur’s north side—a neighborhood that’s seen its share of change.

“I think we can bring a victory to Decatur and give people something the community can be proud of,” Small said.

From the sparkle of a bowling ball to the sizzle of pizza coming out of the oven, the small details still carry the same familiar spirit that’s kept Decatur rolling for generations.
