Ill. (WAND) — A day to honor those who served in the United States Military for their sacrifice and bravery.
There are many local ceremonies to honor those who gave it all.
The Cerro Gordo School District will be having their annual Veterans Day Breakfast and Assembly on Monday, November 11 at the high school. The school administration asks that everyone is aware in advance that the elevator at the school is currently under repair and will not be available for guests to get from the cafeteria to the auditorium. They ask if they are in need, a golf cart ride will be available.
The breakfast begins at 8:15 a.m. in the CGHS cafeteria and the assembly follows at 9:00 a.m. in the CGHS auditorium. Contact the school if you have any specific accommodations.
Meridian Elementary School in Blue Mound will host a Veterans Day program on Monday, November 11 from 9-10:00 a.m.
Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School is putting on a program at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, November 11 for veterans in their school gym. Fr. Mark Tracy, the pastor of Holy Family Church and school will be speaking and sharing his experience as a Chaplin with the Army National Guard.
Shiloh Schools with Jr. Beta will be holding Veterans Day assembly at 8:40 a.m. featuring live music from the Shiloh Music Department, as well as a special guest speaker, and patriotic symbolism education by students. There is a breakfast prior to the assembly at 8:15 a.m. with food and drinks served to veterans.
Lincoln Land Community College is hosting its 29th Veteran Day Ceremony at 12:30 p.m. in the Lincoln Commons on the Springfield campus. The Chatham American Legion Post #759 will be there to post the colors. The LLCC Board of Trustees Chair, Gordon Gates, will serve as master of ceremonies, and LLCC student, a retired Technical Sgt. with the U.S. Air Force, K. William Hudson, will also be providing remarks. LLCC Student Trustee Braden Nicoll will present the wreath, Quentin Brackenridge will sing the national anthem, and Ryan O'Neal will play taps.
Carle Foundation Hospital will host a ceremony outside the flagpole by the Carle Foundation Hospital Heart and Vascular Institute entrance. The VFW Post 5520 Color Guard will perform the flag raising. A spiritual care person will offer prayer. Eric Swensen, the strategic planning coordinator II for Carle Health Strategy and Development and co-lead of the Carle Health MVP (Military and Veteran Professionals) group, will say a few words about the meaning behind the 13 folds of the American Flag. Swenson served in the Army from 2005-2009, including a tour in Iraq from 2003-2004.
Charleston Middle School will host a Veterans Day program on Monday, November 11, from 9-10:00 a.m. in the CMS gym. Local VFW Patriot's Pen student essay contest winners and many local veteran tributes and performances from the CMS chorus, band, and honor band will be present. There is also a "museum' of military and veteran artifacts and a complimentary breakfast for veterans from 8-9:00 a.m. They said they have over 30 veterans planning to attend, and veteran Jim Coleman will give a memorable speech. The Charleston Middle School will also engage its students in lessons and conversations throughout the day about veterans.
