SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The Springfield Police Department says one person was arrested after a high-speed chase and crash Wednesday afternoon.
Springfield police say the chase began when a Macoupin County Sheriff's Deputy attempted to stop a vehicle. Instead of stopping, the vehicle took off at a high rate of speed. Officers say Illinois State Police and the U.S. Marshals Service Task Force joined in the pursuit, but backed off after speeds reached dangerous levels. Police were still able to monitor the vehicle's location via surveillance aircraft.
Illinois State Police notified the Springfield Police Department of the chase, as the vehicle was heading toward the city. Police say the vehicle continued to travel at a high rate of speed on Spring Street, passing a Springfield Police squad car in the process. Officers say the vehicle continued at a high rate of speed before colliding with a truck at the intersection of Spring Street and South Grand Avenue, striking two more vehicles in the process.
After the collision, Springfield police say the driver got out of the vehicle and ran, but was chased down by two bystanders, eventually restraining the individual near the area of First Street and Vine Street. Police quickly reached the scene at took the driver, who was wanted on two felony warrants, into custody.
The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
