MATTOON, Ill. (WAND) — One person is dead and another has been sent to the hospital after a car drove into a Mattoon nursing home Friday morning in a suspected DUI crash.
First responders were called to the Odd-Fellow Rebekah nursing home on Lafayette Ave E near Odd Fellow Road around 11:30 a.m.Â
The Mattoon Police Department said that a Nissan Pathfinder driven by Curtis A. Meadows, 54, crashed into the building. Meadows was arrested for suspicion of aggravated DUI by Mattoon PD.
Two women were in a room at the home when the car hit the building. An 82-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and an 86-year-old was flown to Carle Foundation Hospital in Champaign where she's listed in critical condition, according to Mattoon PD.
A person who answered the phone at the Mattoon Fellowship Center across the street told WAND News that several police, ambulances, and a helicopter were initially on scene.
The Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home Facebook page released a statement confirming the death and hospitalization.
"Our hearts go out to all those affected, and we extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual who lost their life," read part of the post. "Our team and emergency personnel responded swiftly, and we are grateful for their prompt and professional efforts. The safety and well-being of our residents, staff, and community continue to be our highest priority."
This is a developing story.
