SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - One person was transported to a hospital after a van crashed into an ice cream shop on Tuesday in Springfield, according to the Springfield firefighters union.

The crash happened at the Baskin-Robbins on S. MacArthur Blvd. near W. Laurel Street Tuesday afternoon.

Union Local 37 said on Facebook one person was transported but the extent of their injuries wasn't known.

A significant portion of the building collapsed onto the hood of a white minivan. It's not clear if the person who was transported was in the van or inside the Baskin-Robbins. The front of the building, including the sign, and most of the roof collapsed.

The union said building and zoning inspectors are evaluating the "building for structural safety."

A portion of Laurel Street is closed at MacArthur for an ongoing investigation. The City of Springfield said the closure is in place until further notice. They didn't provide a possible time for the road to reopen.

This is a developing story.
