DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - A total of four adults and two children were injured in an early morning apartment building fire in Decatur Friday.Â
The Decatur Fire Department and ambulance services responded at 4 a.m. to the building in the 500 block of S. Church St. It is part of the Huntley Ridge Apartments.Â
Smoke and flames were coming from a second-story apartment when crews arrived. The response was immediately upgraded to a Second Alarm.Â
Firefighters discovered one person who was trapped inside. The victim was rescued and treated on scene before being transported by Abbott Ambulance to Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Another occupant of the apartment was able to get out on their own and drove himself to the hospital. Both people are currently in serious condition.
Four additional victims, two adults and two small children, were leaning out of windows on the apartment floor above the fire. They were rescued by Decatur firefighters using ground ladders and treated for minor smoke inhalation injuries. The victims were transported to DMH for further care.
The apartment building sustained extensive damage from the fire, and its occupants have been displaced. The American Red Cross has been contacted to help those affected, as they will be displaced for an unknown period of time.
The fire is currently under investigation by the Decatur Fire Department. The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office is also assisting with the investigation.
