Petersburg, Ill (WAND) – When Todd Fliss, 64, opened a notice about his Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance premiums, he got a shock. They are jumping from about $564 a month to nearly $1,400 monthly.
Like many people across the country, Fliss is learning the affordable part of the act isn’t so affordable anymore.
“I knew things were changing given the administration and expected a bump. But not $1,400 a month versus $560,” Fliss told WAND News at his home in Petersburg. “If this is indicative of what is transpiring it’s just wrong. When it gets to $1,400 a month you know it doesn’t make sense.”
Increases are coming as Congress failed to extend pandemic-era subsidies. Forcing premiums up and sending insurance providers fleeing the marketplace.
Todd retired early based in part on his ability to afford the insurance premiums under his Aetna 80/20 policy. However, according to mail he received, Aetna will no longer provide his insurance which will now be picked up by United Healthcare.
Todd will look for better rates but worries about others who cannot afford to do it.
“My heart goes out to those who do not have that option,” Fliss stated.
