SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Alexander's Steakhouse in Springfield announced it is closing after 39 years in business.

In a statement on Facebook, Mercedes Restaurants, Inc. President Ron Helms said:

"We regret to inform you that February 29th, 2024, will be our last day of business. As shocking as it is to everyone, it is a decision that had to be made. For the past 3 years, our business has seen dramatic increases in food costs, beverage costs, labor costs, utility costs, rent, other steakhouse restaurant competition and so much more.

Alexander's Steakhouse has tried to promote specials, adjust menu prices (in a reasonable manner) and yet we don't do enough business to make a profit once all the bills are paid. We extended our lease through February to try to see if the holiday period and our latest price increase would turn things around, but it did not.

I want to thank all of our staff members for all of their hard work and dedication to Alexander's Steakhouse and our guests. You have all been great to work with, and I am truly saddened to have to say goodbye.

To our guests - Thank you for 39+ years of your patronage. Many of you have become family over the years. We will continue to operate normally between today and the 29th as long as we have adequate staff to do so."
