CHATHAM, Ill. (WAND) — At Ball Elementary, students get their first lessons in STEAM starting as early as kindergarten.
First grade focuses on math and programming, and only visit once a month. But, that doesn't stop them from excelling.
“What we want to do is expose as many students as we can to the properties of STEAM and what all that encompasses so, science technology, engineering, art, and math,” said K-5 STEAM Teacher, Amy Juhlin.
Juhlin works especially close with students to ensure they're understanding and succeeding.
“It increases as they age and just to watch the first graders like who were here today; they haven’t been here for a month, and what they can remember and recall about how Indie works and how to program is amazing,” stated Juhlin.
Students also talked about what their favorite part of STEAM class is, and how it may help them choose their future careers.
“Stuff like science and engineering and building is also pretty fun. My favorite part is playing with Indie,” said Pierce Glopin and Nora Hapke.
