(WAND) - A bill to reimburse public school teachers' tuition has passed in the Illinois House.Â
HB 4139 is sponsored by State Rep. Sue Scherer (D-Decatur).Â
The legislation is an effort to address the teacher shortage in in Illinois.Â
The bill would allow for eligible teachers to be reimbursed for tuition at a public college or university for up to ten years.Â
Nearly 90% of Illinois schools are reporting staffing shortages, according to a report published by the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of Schools.

The bill passed by a vote of 70 to 42. It now heads to the Senate.Â
