CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND)- Ahead of snowfall in the forecast, C-U Safe Routes to School Project and MTD, are coordinating with the Cities of Urbana and Champaign, to sponsor a volunteer snow removal program called Snow Angels.
The C-U Safe Routes to School Project has put together a list of of priority sidewalks for snow removal.
The project says as snow piles up on sidewalks, ramps, and crosswalks, the daily journeys of students and other community members become more dangerous as they must move into the street. It is particularly difficult for those using mobility assistive devices such as wheelchairs. We are calling on community members to help each other out!
The program will allow volunteers to choose a block or more of these priority sidewalks online and commit to clearing their section within 48 hours after a snowfall greater than 2”.
Volunteers can sign up as individuals or sign up with a group.
As part of this snow removal encouragement program MTD is putting signs on its kiosks, some buses, and distributing yard signs to encourage everyone to help keep our students and residents safe.
