ARTHUR, Ill. (WAND) — A soldier from central Illinois who fought in World War Two has been accounted for.

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced that U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Paul A. Gregg of Arthur, Illinois was accounted for on May 29, 2025. The agency said that more details can be shared now that Gregg's family has received a full briefing on his identification.

Gregg, who was 29 years old, was reported missing in action on December 18, 1944 after fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. His remains were not accounted for after the war, and army officials issued a presumptive finding of death on December 19, 1945.

Gregg's remains were dug up in 2024 at the recommendation of a DPAA historian to be identified. Scientists were able to identify him using various methods and circumstantial evidence, including dental analysis.

Gregg will be buried in Arcola. There is no burial date set yet. For family and funeral information, contact the Army Casualty Office at 800-892-2490.
