CANTON - In the wake of the November 16 gas explosion in Canton, the Canton Area Chamber of Commerce is warning Illinois residents of various scams using the recent tragedy as a way to make money.
Canton city officials say crowd funding scams have recently started to appear on social media, looking to cash in on the generosity of individuals who wish to give aid to affected individuals and businesses. Officials say not to donate to these campaigns, and that the Canton Area Chamber of Commerce is working to create "a legitimate means to contribute to those affected by this disaster."
More information about this project will be available on the Canton Area Chamber of Commerce's Facebook page.
If you have seen, or have fallen victim to one of these scams, you are urged to call your local law enforcement agency.
