DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - There will be a carseat safety check event in Decatur Tuesday.
The Macon County Health Department will be hosting the event at the Decatur Fire Department's Fire Station 1 at 1415 North Water St. from 9 a.m. to noon.
Certified child passenger safety technicians will check car seats to make sure they are installed correctly and show parents how to make sure children are fastened in safely.
Three out of every four car seats are not used or installed correctly, the health department says.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends keeping children rear-facing as long as possible up to the top height or weight allowed by their seats.
Illinois law states a child must be in an appropriate car seat or booster seat until their eighth birthday, but some children that age are not tall enough for the seat belt to fit them correctly.
Kids should stay in a booster set until they are 4'9".
To schedule an appointment for a car seat check, please call the Macon County Health Department at (217) 423-6988 ext. 1312.
