TOLONO – Tolono area residents were informed at 7 PM on Wednesday that an anhydrous leak had caused a vapor cloud to develop.
The leak was a substantial amount of Anhydrous Ammonia from a United Prairie Storage facility, just outside of Tolono. A vapor cloud developed and moved in the south-southwest direction toward Sadorus. Residents in the path of the cloud were notified to shelter in place to avoid exposure.
Personnel reported the leak had been contained at around 7:30 PM.
The vapor cloud has continued to move in the south-southwest direction, but officials say it is dissipating as it moves. They say residents in the cloud’s path may smell a strong ammonia odor and should stay indoors until the odor lessens.
It is possible those in the path of the cloud may experience minor breathing difficulties or eye irritation. The cloud will continue to dissipate.
