CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - A sales tax increase is up for a vote in Champaign County.Â
The county board approved adding a referendum on the November ballot.
Voters will be asked if they approve a quarter cent increase to the county's sales tax rate.Â
The News Gazette reports the increase will help increase wages for correctional officers and add more sheriff's deputies to help with a new mental health focused court program.Â
If approved, the county's total sales tax rate would be half a percent.Â
It is estimated to bring in more than $7 million in additional revenue.Â
