SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A special store in Springfield is welcoming in it's youngest shoppers.
As many community members scramble to find last minute gifts, The Holiday Store is helping children get in on the fun.Â
Amy Taylor, President of the Board of Directors for Mini O'Beirne Crisis Nursery, says this tradition in the community has been going on for over 35 years. Families can bring their children in with a budget, to shop for presents to gift their loved ones.
"They write down everybody that the child has to buy for. And then they get started. The volunteer elf asks, 'What would mom like?' 'What kind of things does dad like?' And then she get shopping" Amy explains.
Kids walk around with a basket and clipboard, checking off each name they find a present for.
Tables line the room with gifts for children to look at. There's jewelry, stuffed animals, cups, and special signs. After they pay for their gifts, kids can head to the wrapping station to put their final touches together with a card and bow.
"Fingers crossed they like it!" Says one shopper as she seals off her Christmas card.Â
Amy explains, not only is this a way for children to get involved with holiday shopping, but it's also a way to support the Mini O'Beirne Crisis Nursery.Â
She explains, "It is our biggest fundraiser. All of the money we make goes back to the Mini O'Beirne Crisis Nursery to prevent child abuse and neglect, and to help families that are going through crisis."
The tradition of the Holiday Store, continues to be a special tradition for the Springfield community.
If you wish to visit the Holiday Store, it is located 1919 W. Monroe Street. They are open through December 21st.
