Christmas Tree Disposal

Decatur- Christmas is over and now you need to start thinking about where to dispose of your Christmas tree.

The Macon County Composting Facility in Decatur is accepting Christmas trees to be dropped off at their location free of charge during regular business hours. When dropping off the Christmas tree, they ask that all lights be removed from the tree, while tinsel can remain on the tree.

Garbage men will be picking trees that are left at the curbs of residents to bring them to the facility, for those who do not want to make the trip. "The garbage haulers will bring a lot of them in. but you can't have the lights, a lot of people will leave the lights on but we can't take them like that. The EPA won't let us, so they have to dispose of them somewhere else if they have the lights on them." said Arthur Coffman, a manger at The Macon County Composting Facility.

Any unwanted Christmas lights can be dropped off for recycling through January 20,2017 at the office of the Macon County Environmental Management Department at 141 S. Main St, room 408. They are open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

All trees taken to the facility will be turned into mulch.

Macon County Composting Facility is located at 3520 Bearsdale Road in Decatur. Their winter hours are 8:00 to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday.

Trees may also be disposed of at the location they were purchased depending on the business.
