Clinton Walmart to close doors

CLINTON, Ill. (WAND) - The Walmart in Clinton will soon close, according to a Walmart spokesperson.

Director of Communications Anne Hatfield said about 70 associates work at the Clinton location. The store and pharmacy's final day will be July 20.

Walmart is hoping that the 70 employees can be transferred to other nearby stores. If employees don't want to transfer they will be payed until Aug. 31. If a transfer is not available employees might be able to get a severance package.

Hatfield said this was a tough decision but they closed the store for a number of issues, included low performance.

“The decision to close our Clinton store is not an easy one, but, as a company, we are committed to continuing our growth and investment in Illinois. We opened this store in 1983 and we are as proud today as we’ve ever been with how the store leadership and associates have served and contributed to the local community over the years. We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them in Clinton. We look forward to continuing to serve them at other area locations and online at walmart.com.”

The store has been open since 1983.

The Mayor of Clinton, Roger Cyrulik, said they just learned of the closure on Wednesday morning. He said it will be a major impact to the city.

According to Mayor Cyrulik, he hopes to contact Walmart in the coming days to see if they can change their minds.Â
