SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — This afternoon, community members gathered together to offer support to the family of Sonya Massey, a woman shot by a Sangamon County Sheriff's deputy, as they viewed body-worn camera footage from the shooting.
Community activist Tiara Standage and Intricate Minds have been leading protests for the past week demanding answers from officials. At 3 p.m., community members gathered at the Springfield Branch NAACP in a show of solidarity and support.
After Massey's family viewed footage, which won't be available to the public until Monday morning, the Sangamon County State's Attorney announced that murder charges had been filed against now-former deputy Sean P. Grayson.
Grayson shot Massey at her own home on July 6 while responding to a 911 call.
Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell said that Grayson's actions "do not reflect the values and training of the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office or law enforcement as a whole."
Her obituary states that Sonya Massey was a devoted mother of two who loved doing hair and spending time with her family. Funeral services are set for Friday.
