SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Illinois State Police confirmed that there is body worn camera video that captured an incident in which Sangamon County Sheriff’s deputies shot 36-year-old Sonya Massey on July 6.
What we know now:
Two deputies arrived at the 2800 block of Hoover Avenue in Springfield around 12:50 a.m. on Saturday, July 6. The initial news release said that 911 was called for a report of a prowler in the area. After searching the area, the deputies reported that Massey had been shot. On Monday, Sangamon Co. Sheriff's Office Spokesperson Jeff Wilhite clarified that she was shot by deputies.
Massey was taken to a local hospital where she died that same morning. Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon said that Massey was transported by EMS from her own home. The autopsy results showed that she died from being shot.
The deputies involved have been placed on leave.
What we're working to find out:
It is currently unclear what led deputies to shoot Massey. Neither Illinois State Police or the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office have confirmed whether she was armed or if she was related to the initial prowling call. The names of the deputies involved have not been released.
ISP said that additional information, including the video, will be released to Massey's family "when appropriate."
In a statement posted on Facebook, Sheriff Jack Campbell said that his normal procedure is to "respond to inquiries and to give public statements in regard to major events" but that doing so "would not be appropriate" in this case.
