URBANA, Ill. (WAND) —  After a contentious two-night debate, Urbana City Council is still split on whether to add new patrol officers to its police force.

A new Deputy Chief and training Sergeant will be the only positions added. The decision comes after Chief Larry Boone called for more staff and resources in next year's budget.

Chief Boone said his officers are burnt out and working too much overtime.

"I don't know what events may occur ... I don't know what events we may have to detail officers to ... I understand the concern amongst all of you. I understand it," said Boone.

A strong outcry from the public during Monday night's meeting, resulted in the meeting being recessed, and continued tonight.

Council member Jaya Kolisetty said the public wants to see more of the city's money going towards prevention instead of policing.

"The vast majority have said please slow down, please let us have a say. Please remember you represent us and our voices matter," said Kolisetty.

The Council says they are working on additional plan to create an alternative police model, and intend to invest money in staffing this initiative with uniform officers and non-police staff.
