Springfield Fire Chief Ed Canney spoke to WAND News regarding the remains found in the rubble.
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The Sangamon Co. Coroner is conducting tests on human remains found inside a burned home in Springfield.Â
Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon said in a statement that his office was notified about human remains at a home on North 10th Street on June 7. Allmon said the fire in the 900 block happened on May 19th.
It's not clear why weeks passed before the remains were found.
WAND News has contacted the Springfield Fire Department but hasn't received a response to an inquiry about the fire.Â
Allmon said a forensic pathologist has examined the remains, which belong to a male. Further identification of the body is pending additional DNA tests by Illinois State Police, according to Allmon.
A formal identification is expected next week.Â
Allmon and the Springfield Fire Department continue to investigate.Â
This is a developing story.
