Elm Street Shooting

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - An arrest has been made in a shooting in Champaign that left a person seriously injured last November. 

On November 17, 2025, at approximately 2:35 a.m., Champaign police responded to the 700 block of N. Elm Street, following a report of a shooting.

Officers found a resident suffering from multiple potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds. The woman continues to recover from her injuries.

The investigation indicated that the resident was answering a late-night knock at her door when police said 31-year-old James E. Brown opened fire, hitting her multiple times. Brown fled the area before officers arrived. 

Brown was arrested in Champaign on May 14 during the execution of a search warrant related to the investigation. He now faces charges including Attempted Murder, Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon.
