TILTON, Ill. (WAND) - A 36-year-old Danville man has been arrested after a fatal hit and run crash in Vermilion County on Sunday.Â
Vermilion County Sheriff's Department arrested Andre Sanders, in connection with the fatal crash that occurred in the 100 block of West 7th Street in Tilton.
The Vermilion County coroner identified Mitchell Leon Burks, Jr. 44, of Tilton, as the pedestrian killed in the crash.Â
Tilton Police and Vermilion County deputies were called to the area for a report from a passerby of an unresponsive male in the roadway on Sunday morning just after 6:00 a.m.
Further investigation found that Sanders was driving his vehicle westbound on 7th Street, just before 2:00 a.m., when he struck the pedestrian.
Deputies said Sanders stopped and exited his vehicle, observed that he had struck a person, then left the scene without reporting the crash or calling for medical assistance for Burks.
Sanders and his vehicle were located at his home just before 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. He was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash.
An autopsy for Burks was scheduled on Monday. The Vermilion County Sheriff’s Office, the Illinois State Police, and the Vermilion County Coroner’s office continue to investigate.
