SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - A District 186 staff member was arrested for battery on campus.

The Springfield Police Department told WAND News that Assistant Principal Chris Hampsey was arrested last week at Lanphier High School.

WAND News partner WTAX learned that Hampsey is now on administrative leave after being accused of putting his hands on a student.

While Hampsey was arrested, he has not formally been charged.

District 186 sent WAND News a statement saying:

"We are aware of the recent actions taken by one of our administrators at Lanphier High School. These actions do not align with our training or district policies. We do not condone this behavior in any way and are deeply upset by these events.

We have immediately initiated a full internal investigation, and we have taken appropriate measures, including immediate administrative leave. The well-being of our students and staff remains our top priority.

District 186 is committed to fostering a safe environment through ongoing training and accountability. We appreciate the understanding that we will need to let the investigative process take place both internally and through law enforcement."

This story will be updated with more information as it comes in.
