CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — The University of Illinois Police Department's most senior patrol officer was honored with Badge 1 Wednesday morning.

According to UIPD, Badge 1 is a tradition started by former Executive Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police, Barbara O'Connor. It's meant to acknowledge the service of longstanding patrol officers.

Officer Troy Chew was presented with the badge Wednesday. He came to UIPD after working for the Illinois Department of Corrections and the Danville Police Department, according to a social media post from the department.

He was chosen to partner with the department's first explosive detection K9, Nala, and is currently partnered with K9 Zuri.

"Throughout his 23 years at UIPD, Ofc. Chew has demonstrated leadership and dedication to public safety, positively impacting our campus community and Champaign County," read the post.
