TAYLORVILLE, Ill. (WAND) - Cups for a Cure raised $3,500 as part of its "Paint the Square Pink" event to help local women get access to critical breast cancer screening and preventative care.

All proceeds from the fundraiser benefitted the Taylorville Memorial Hospital Mammography Assistance Program (MAP), helping underinsured and uninsured patients pay for mammograms.

Since 2011, the group has been able to provide over 260 women with free mammograms, valued at over $72,000. Cups for a Cure has raised over $50,000 of that total.

Susan Huggins, a radiation therapist and organizer with Cups for a Cure, said that she has seen younger women come through the door needing mammograms and unable to get them.

"We live in an area that maybe is a little underserved ... we don't live next to a large city. So it's nice that we have this for the people in Christian County in our area that they can get access to these funds," Huggins said.

Katie Champion Williams is the Foundation Director at Taylorville Memorial Hospital. For her, the issue hits close to home.

"It makes my heart swell as the daughter of someone who lost the battle to breast cancer, to have this kind of support and this community so that women can get their screenings and they can have those early diagnosis," Williams said.

If you live in Christian County, you can call Taylorville Memorial Hospital at 217-707-5550. Those who do not live in the service zone, you can reach out to other hospitals in your area to see if they have similar funds set up.
