ISP Arcola crash

ARCOLA, Ill, (WAND) - An Illinois State Police car was hit Thursday morning while a trooper was conducting traffic control related to a separate crash in Douglas County.

Police temporarily closed a section of I-57 North, just north of Arcola, due to a property damage crash.

According to ISP, a trooper was parked across the northbound lanes with emergency lights on at around 5:50 a.m.

Traffic was being diverted at milepost 203 onto IL 133 to avoid the crash scene. A car failed to exit and hit the squad car.

Police said the trooper was not in the car at the time of the crash and was not hurt.

68-year-old Donald Morecraft of Robinson, IL was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and a Scott's Law/Move Over Law violation.

ISP said they have now suffered 12 Move Over Law-related crashed in 2025, and saw 27 crashes with 12 troopers injured and one killed in 2024.

The law requires drivers to move over when approaching an emergency vehicle or any vehicle with emergency or hazard lights on.

Anyone who breaks the law faces a fine of no less than $250 and no more than $10,000 for a first offense. If the violation results in someone getting hurt, the driver's license will be suspended for a mandatory period of anywhere between six months and two years.
