Police: Child dies after apparent accidental shooting in Champaign

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - Champaign Police are investigating after a child died Tuesday evening after being shot.

Officers were called to the 1100 block of North Third Street at about 11:26 p.m. after a 911 caller reported that a child had been injured in an apparent accidental shooting.

Police said officers arrived and provided immediate medical aid before the child was taken by ambulance to an area hospital in critical condition. The child later died from their injuries.

Detectives are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Officers are also canvassing the area for information and evidence.

The investigation remains ongoing.
