DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - The City of Decatur will soon have new affordable apartments for seniors.

Decatur City Council approved $675,000 in HOME Investment Partnership Program funds for the project Monday night.

Developers will transform the former Garfield School on West Grand Avenue into 63 apartments.

Eighteen units will be reserved for low-income seniors, and management and community services will also be on-site.

"This is a phased approach, so this first development is just for the original Garfield School building, and then there could be an additional phase where additional buildings are built on the vacant lot," said Director of the Economic and Community Development Lacie Elzy.

Construction crews hope to break ground by the end of December, with leasing projected to begin in April 2027.
