DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — July is National Ice Cream Month, and with central Illinois in the grip of summer heat, many families are searching for a way to cool off.
In Decatur, one local ice cream shop is celebrating the season while preparing for a big, exciting expansion.
The Frozen Spoon has become a summertime tradition for many in the community, serving soft-serve ice cream, sundaes and specialty treats from its Wyckles Road location.
Owner Taylor Page said one of her favorite parts of the job is getting to know the customers who return year after year.
"We have lots of regulars and those are my favorite," Page said. "When you start working here for the summer, you quickly learn who everyone is. You'll quickly learn their orders. There's people who come here and order the exact same thing every day."
Now, the business is growing with a new permanent walk-up addition designed to bring back the nostalgic experience of ordering ice cream through a window on a summer evening.
"I chose the old-school walk-up style because I really wanted that nostalgic feeling," Page said.
While the business is expanding, Page said its mission remains unchanged.
"I love the hometown pride ... it overflows my heart with joy," she said.
The Frozen Spoon expects to open its new walk-up windows by the end of July. For summertime hours, click here.
