House fire in Decatur

The Decatur Fire Department responded to the 1500 block of E. Vanderhoof St.

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - A 3-year-old boy and 73-year-old man are in critical condition after a house fire Tuesday morning in Decatur.

Decatur Fire Department Chief Neil Elder told WAND News the two have since been transported to a hospital outside of Decatur for treatment.

Firefighters were called to the 1500 block of E. Vanderhoof St. around 8:40 a.m. That's near S. 16th Street and not far from Eisenhower High School.

Someone driving by saw the fire and called 911. Fire officials said when they arrived they found heavy smoke and fire at the home.

A WAND News photojournalist saw firefighters rescue two people from the home and put them into an ambulance.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Elder reminded residents to make sure they have properly installed and working smoke detectors in their homes.
