SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Continued work on a high-speed rail project through Springfield could depend on funding in the closing days of the Biden Administration.

High-speed rail development and work dates back to at least the early 90s. Senator Dick Durbin, (D) Illinois, has played a major role in pushing the Chicago to Springfield to St. Louis project forward.

While the Amtrak friendly Biden Administration has helped provide the federal dollars needed for the massive project it is unclear whether the incoming Trump administration will do the same. So, Senator Durbin is encouraging the Biden Administration to make sure the money has been distributed before he leaves office on January 20, 2025.

“This is a major project that will change the Capitol City forever. But I don’t assume a thing until we have the money in hand,” Senator Durbin told WAND News. “The fact that there’s a change in administration leads me to contact the current Biden Administration and ask them to do everything they can to commit that money as quickly as possible.”

Senator Durbin says the high-speed rail project through Springfield is in its final and largest phase.
