OAKLAND, Ill. (WAND) — A Coles County school district is investigating after falling victim to a cybersecurity attack over their holiday break.
In a press release sent to WAND News, Oakland Community School District 5 said hackers gained access to their systems and demanded payment to restore them.
The district said they did not pay the criminals, working with cybersecurity experts and using backup systems to recover their systems before the end of the holiday break.
The investigation is ongoing, but according to the district, they do not believe any sensitive student data, the human resources system or the payroll system were impacted.
The district said they are working with police to investigate the incident.
