DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — As the holiday season approaches the Fallen Heroes Tree of Honor was lit Friday afternoon at the Decatur Civic Center. Gold Star Families placed ornaments in memory of loved ones killed while on active duty in the military.
“It allows us to bring Gold Star Families … together to provide hope and healing as we continue to honor our heroes,” said Theresa Palmer whose son Logan was killed on the USS John McCain in 2017. “These families have experienced a loss that no one should ever experience. It is not a group that any of us want to be part of.”
Similar trees will be lit in ceremonies in Bloomington and Peoria. The Bloomington location is at the Central Illinois Regional Airport November 15, 2023. Also, the Peoria Riverfront Museum on November 18th.
