(WAND) — Former Illinois Governor George Ryan died Friday morning at the age of 91 after spending time in hospice care over the last few days.

Ryan served as Illinois' governor for 4 years from 1999-2003. As governor, he is known for lifting the death penalty in Illinois.

Ryan also spent almost 6 years in prison after a conviction in a case related to a 1994 crash that killed 6 children. The truck driver responsible for the crash got their license by bribing someone in Ryan's office when he served as Secretary of State.
