THOMASBORO, Ill. (WAND) — After data revealed an increased amount of crashes at two intersections on U.S 45 near Thomasboro, the Illinois Department of Transportation is evaluating a proposed project for improvement.

The project is still in the first phase, where IDOT engineers are constructing preliminary designs.

The project involves the two-way stop-controlled intersections of U.S. 45, at Flatville Road and Laverette Road. U.S. 45 is a four-lane divided roadway with left turn lanes in both directions. Both intersections experience severe crashes at a higher-than-average rate.

IDOT Project Engineer Ryan Carroll said their biggest focus is making the road safer to drive on. "Biggest point here for us is to improve safety at these intersections, reduce crashes, and reduce the severity of crashes." Carroll explained.

The proposed project converts the two-way stop-controlled intersections into J-turn intersections. A J-turn intersection reduces the number of conflict points, while still maintaining consistent travel.

The entire project will cost $5.7 million of federal safety money. Construction is planned for Summer 2026, and projected to be completed in one construction season.
