SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal and the Illinois Department of Public Health are recognizing EMS professionals across the state during National EMS Week, running May 17 through May 23.
This year marks the 52nd annual EMS Week, with the theme “Improving Outcomes, Together,” highlighting both patient care and the well-being of emergency responders.
State Fire Marshal Michele Pankow praised EMS workers for their dedication and commitment to helping people during emergencies.
“Whether responding to medical emergencies, serious accidents, natural disasters, or everyday calls for help, you are there in the moments when people need you most,” Pankow said.
IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra also thanked EMS professionals for providing lifesaving care and stability during times of crisis.
According to state officials, Illinois saw more than 8.8 million 911 calls in 2025. The state is supported by more than 613 ambulance providers, 2,700 ambulances, over 20,000 EMTs, and more than 16,000 paramedics.
Officials say Illinois fire departments also respond to more than 1 million rescue and EMS incidents each year, making up about 70% of all emergency responses statewide.
National EMS Week was established in 1974 to recognize EMS professionals and the critical role they play in communities across the country.
