CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — One person was arrested, and police are searching for a second suspect after reports of two armed people making threats Sunday.

The University of Illinois Police Department said officers responded to the 700 block of South Fifth Street in Champaign just after 12:30 a.m.

Officers found a person under the age of 18 who matched the description of one of the suspects. When officers approached, the person ran.

They were arrested a short time later, and police found a gun without a serial number along the path the suspect took while running.

According to UIPD, officers continued searching the area but could not find the second suspect, prompting a campus-wide Illini Alert.

Following the investigation, the department said officers determined the second suspect was no longer in the area and issued an all-clear notification.

The juvenile was arrested on charges of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of an unserialized firearm and resisting or obstructing a peace officer.

According to police, no more details will be released due to the age of the suspects. UIPD said it has focused more security resources on the Green Street area and will continue to do so following the incident and throughout the semester.

Anyone with information is asked to call the University of Illinois Police Department at 217-333-1216.
